Change money in Thailand

Many tourists take cash (euros) with them to Thailand and change it there into the Thai currency "baht". [ abbreviated "BHT" or "THB" ISO code].

You can either withdraw money with your credit card or change euros at one of the countless exchange offices.

There are banknotes of 1000, 500, 100, 50 and 20 BHT.
There are coins of 10, 5 and 1 BHT.
There are even smaller coins called "Satang" than 50 and 25.
e.g.: 1 EUR = 36.65 THB

As everywhere else in the world, the worst exchange rates are offered by dubious street traders. Only with a lot of luck you will get exchanged over real money. The second worst option is to exchange your money for Thai money in Germany / Europe. There you lose a lot of money because you get much less THB for your Euros. Hotels in Thailand also offer a bad exchange rate. However, this is rare because it is rarely used by anyone. Also bad are the exchange offices directly at the airport. The exchange rates there are always very bad. There are usually 1-2 good bureaux de change at airports, but they are usually hidden on the ground floor, or where tourists dont usually go. Therefore, exchange offices or ATMs at the airport are only suitable for the most necessary money you need for a taxi.

The most popular exchange offices because they are free of charge and have a good exchange rate are the following:
1st place: T.T. Currency Exchange (yellow)
2nd place: Siam Commercial Bank (purple)
Passport
To change money you have to show your passport at the counter.
A copy of it will be made. You dont usually have to show your original passport, but you can show a copy of it yourself.

Instead of using an exchange office, you can also use a credit card to withdraw cash. Many people find it too risky to carry a large amount of cash around with them.

*All outgoing links are so-called Ref-ID links. This means that if you buy something (no one has to, of course), the linking party (in this case the author) earns a few cents without it costing you more.
