You need your smartphone and passport, which you MUST show.
Directly at the airport or in any 7-Eleven shop.
It is advisable to go to one of the larger shopping centres.
My personal favourite is dtac, because it is very cheap and always offers a flat rate for a one-time fee of about €10.
Cancellation is also not necessary. The contract ends automatically after the period you have paid for.

Basically, a flat rate that is valid for one month is recommended.
The download rate should be at least 2MB.
For films in the hotel room, 2MB is rather too slow.
For Youtube, however, it is sufficient.
You dont need that much for news or Instagram.
Never far, there is always at least one restaurant with free internet (WIFI). The prices for a sim card are so cheap that you dont need to save money here. At every airport and in every tourist area there is at least one shop nearby that will sell you a SIM card. In the big shopping centres you are even guaranteed to find a shop from "AIS", "true move" or "dtac". Whereby dtac is always the cheapest. Monthly flat rates with 2MB download rate are available for about 10€. They are usually called Happy-Tourist or XY-Tourist.
The biggest provider is "AIS". It also has the best network coverage. This means that there are only a few places in Thailand where you would have no or poor reception.
All three providers are actually very similar. You need to have a document with you when you buy. A driving licence or passport is sufficient.
There are weekly and monthly packages that allow you to make phone calls and access the internet. It is usually enough to buy the smallest package. In the hotel itself, you access the WLAN(WIFI). So you have to go to a shop of one of the providers and tell the salesperson that you want a SIM-CARD. Tell them which prepaid package you want and they will insert the SIM card directly into your phone and activate it. In most cases, the appropriate packages are even called "Tourist Package", "Lucky Traveller SIM" or similar. The packages usually cost between €4 and €20 and are valid for about 14 days. There is always a suitable package ranging from daily to monthly packages.

If you have used up your package, you do not need a new SIM card. Just go back to an AIS, DTAC or TRUEMOVE shop. The staff there do nothing else all day and definitely know what to do. Just ask and tell them that you already have a SIM card in your mobile phone and just want a top-up.
